Periodontal Care

Periodontal Care

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Our periodontal program focuses on early detection, effective treatment, and long-term maintenance to protect your gums, bone, and overall health.

What we do

  • Comprehensive periodontal evaluations
    • We measure pocket depths, assess gum inflammation and recession, check bone levels with digital imaging, and review medical risk factors. This lets us detect periodontal disease early and tailor a plan to your needs.
  • Personalized periodontal therapy
    • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) to remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins below the gumline.
    • Ultrasonic cleaning tools that gently and efficiently break up hardened deposits while flushing bacteria from pockets.
    • Localized antimicrobial therapy when appropriate to reduce bacterial load and support healing.
  • Bacterial testing
    • Salivary or subgingival bacterial testing identifies specific periodontal pathogens. Knowing your bacterial profile helps us choose targeted therapies and track your response over time.
  • Perio Protect trays
    • Custom-fitted trays deliver a low-dose, dentist-prescribed antimicrobial gel deep into periodontal pockets at home. This adjunctive therapy helps reduce bacteria between visits and supports healing alongside in-office care.
  • Periodontal maintenance
    • After active therapy, we schedule maintenance cleanings at intervals recommended for your condition (often every 3-4 months).
    • Visits include pocket measurements, ultrasonic and hand instrumentation, polishing, reinforcement of home care, and review of risk factors to keep disease from returning.

What to expect

  • A clear diagnosis and staging of your gum health.
  • A step-by-step treatment plan with timelines and costs.
  • Guidance on home care, including brushing, interdental cleaning, and use of prescribed gels in Perio Protect trays when indicated.
  • Ongoing monitoring with periodic reevaluations and, when used, follow-up bacterial testing to document improvement.

Periodontal disease is a gradual infection of the gums and the supporting bone. It is caused when the build up of plaque on and around the teeth calcifies into tartar. This tartar is covered with plaque that contains micro- organisms which release toxins causing the first stage of gum disease known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is characterized by swelling, inflammation, and bleeding of the gums. In the advanced stage of gum disease (referred to as periodontitis), the toxins cause the bone to resorb or dissolve. The teeth having lost a part of their bone support begin to move & eventually with more bone loss there is tooth loss.

The ravages of gum disease are best prevented by early detection and proper dental hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day helps to remove the thin layer of bacteria that release dangerous toxins into your mouth. Flossing or other interdental cleansing is also important to keep your mouth free from residual food and bacteria. Also, using a mouth rinse, prescription or over the counter considerably reduces the microbial count in your saliva. Finally, maintaining a balanced diet and scheduling regular dental appointments help stem the advance of gum disease and keep you healthy and smiling.
